The Department of World Languages and Literatures proudly participates in the Collegiate Academy Concurrent Enrollment Program, offering courses as part of our commitment to supporting students' early college success.

FREN 112 Coordinator: Elena Shimanskaya, Ph.D.
This course is designed as a year-long course for students who have no knowledge or very basic knowledge of the Japanese language. Students learn how to read and write hiragana, katakana, some kanji and practice basic conversation in Japanese.

JPN 111 Coordinator: Soichiro Motohashi, M.A.
Motohashi-sensei began serving as the coordinator for JPN 112 in 2024 and serves as the JPN 111 Coordinator in the 2026-2027 academic year. He teaches both language and content courses across the 100-300 levels. He also collaborates with Kadowaki-sensei as a Japanese minor advisor during the fall semester in the Department of World Languages and Literatures.
This course is designed as a year-long course for students who have completed JPN 111 and/or have mastered hiragana, katakana, kanji and grammar covered in JPN 111. Students learn more grammar, vocabulary, kanji and practice conversation to develop their Japanese language skills further.

JPN 112 Coordinator: Yoshie Kadowaki, M.A.
Yoshie Kadowaki has been teaching Japanese at the ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵ since 2005. She served as the coordinator of JPN 111 from 2022 to 2026 in the Collegiate Academy. She began to coordinate JPN 112 in the 2026-2027 academic year.
Introduction to basic Spanish language structures and cultural topics with a focus on the development of communicative proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. For beginners only. Our students complete the same type of assignments, use the same textbook and receive the same number of college credits as our ·¬ÇÑÊÓƵ students, but also receive high school credit.

SPAN 111 Coordinator: Mark Aaron Kay, M.A.
Mark Kay served as the Department of World Languages and Literatures coordinator for Collegiate Academy during the 2022-2023 school year. He then began coordinating SPAN 111 and 112 in 2023.
Continues introduction to basic Spanish language structures and cultural topics with a focus on proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Our students complete the same type of assignments, use the same textbook and receive the same number of college credits as our University students, but also receive high school credit.

SPAN 112 Coordinator: Mark Aaron Kay, M.A.
Mark Kay served as the Department of World Languages and Literatures coordinator for Collegiate Academy during the 2022-2023 school year. He then began coordinating SPAN 111 and 112 in 2023.
This course is designed as a year-long course for students who speak Spanish at home and have little to no formal training. Our students complete the same type of assignments, use the same textbook and receive the same number of college credits as our University students, but also receive high school credit.

SPAN 226 Coordinator: Roberto Ortiz, M.A.
Roberto Ortiz designed and began coordinating SPAN 111 and 112 in 2022. In 2023, SPAN 226 was added to the Collegiate Academy course list. As the lead instructor for heritage courses at the University, he began to coordinate the SPAN 226 concurrent enrollment courses in 2024. However, he continues to assist as needed with SPAN 111 and 112.
