Honoring the legacy of a pioneering forestry educator whose vision created a living outdoor classroom at the ·¬ÇÑÊÓÆµ.

The Dr. Elwood L. Miller Research Grove at the ·¬ÇÑÊÓÆµ's Valley Road Field Lab is more than a collection of trees. It's a living laboratory where students, researchers and visitors can explore forest ecology, tree diversity and sustainable natural resource management.

Established by Faculty Emeritus Elwood Miller, Ph.D., the grove represents decades of dedication to forestry education and hands-on learning. In 2026, the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources formally named the grove in his honor, recognizing his lasting contributions to the University, its students and the forestry profession.

Who is Elwood L. Miller?

Elwood Miller

Elwood L. Miller is a forester, educator and longtime University leader whose career has been devoted to forestry, conservation, student learning and public service. Before beginning his academic career, he spent 10 years working as an on-the-ground professional forester with the U.S. Forest Service. That practical experience shaped the way he approached forestry education throughout his career, connecting scientific knowledge with the realities of managing forests and natural resources. 

At the ·¬ÇÑÊÓÆµ, Miller became known as an exceptional forestry educator and a dedicated mentor to students. He believed forestry was best understood through direct observation and experience. His teaching encouraged students to step outside the classroom, study living trees and landscapes, and consider how ecological science could inform responsible forest management.

Miller served as chair of the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Science during its formative years. In that leadership role, he helped guide the development of natural resources education and strengthened the University’s commitment to forestry and environmental science. He later served for 16 years as associate dean of the College, extending his influence across academic programs, faculty leadership and student success. 

In 1976, Miller received both the College’s and the University’s Outstanding Teacher Award. The recognition reflected his ability to combine scientific knowledge, professional experience and a genuine commitment to his students. 

A licensed professional forester for more than 45 years, Miller remained closely connected to the forestry profession throughout his academic and post-University career. His work reflected a commitment to science-based forest management, conservation and responsible stewardship of natural resources. 

Among his most enduring contributions was the establishment of the Research Grove at the Valley Road Field Lab. Miller envisioned the Grove as a place where students could learn directly from living specimens and observe a variety of tree species growing side by side. That vision created an outdoor educational resource that continues to connect forestry instruction, research and public learning. 

Today, Elwood Miller is Faculty Emeritus in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources. In 2026, the College also selected him as its Distinguished Awardee in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the College, the University and the forestry profession. 

Why Is the Grove Named After Elwood L. Miller?

During his career, Elwood Miller believed that students learned forestry best by observing living landscapes rather than relying only on textbooks. To put that philosophy into practice, he established what became the Research Grove at the ·¬ÇÑÊÓÆµ’s Valley Road Field Lab. There, students could examine different tree species side by side and learn to recognize the characteristics that distinguish one species from another. 

The Grove reflects Miller’s belief that education should be grounded in experience. By studying living trees, students can connect classroom concepts with the visible characteristics of each species, including its leaves, needles, bark, form and growth pattern. The Grove transforms those individual observations into a broader understanding of tree diversity, forest ecology and natural resource stewardship.

The Grove also provides a setting for scientific inquiry. Different species growing within the same landscape can prompt questions about growth, adaptation, environmental conditions and long-term performance. Rather than presenting forestry as a fixed body of knowledge, the Grove encourages learners to observe closely, compare evidence and ask new questions.

At the heart of Miller’s legacy is mentorship. His influence extends beyond the positions he held or the awards he received. It can also be seen in the generations of students he taught, encouraged and prepared for careers in forestry and natural resources management. Naming the Grove in his honor connects future learners with that tradition of education and mentorship.

The dedication also recognizes Elwood Miller’s lifelong commitment to stewardship. He understood forestry as both a scientific discipline and a responsibility to care for natural resources thoughtfully. The Grove carries that principle forward as a place where visitors can learn, discover and consider their own role in stewarding the natural world. The dedication materials recognize Elwood L. Miller and Barbara K. Miller for a lifetime of dedication to education, forestry, conservation and service. 

By formally naming the site the Dr. Elwood L. Miller Research Grove, the College honors both the person who established it and the educational vision he placed at its roots.

The Dr. Elwood L. Miller Research Grove contains 17 different tree specimens representing a variety of species used for education and research. Each specimen is identified with an interpretive label displaying its common name and scientific name, helping visitors move from observation to discovery.

Learn tree identification

Tree identification begins with careful observation. Visitors can examine leaves or needles, bark, branching patterns, tree form and other distinguishing features while learning the common and scientific names of each specimen.

Compare native and introduced species

Seeing multiple species in one location allows visitors to consider how trees differ in form, structure and environmental needs. The collection can also help learners explore distinctions between trees native to the region and species introduced from other places.

Study bark, leaves and growth habits

The Grove provides opportunities to look beyond a tree’s name and study the physical traits that help define a species. Seasonal changes may reveal additional characteristics, from new foliage and flowering to autumn color and winter form.

Understand forest ecology

Individual trees can serve as an entry point into larger ecological questions. Visitors can consider how trees interact with soil, water, climate, wildlife and other plants, and how those relationships shape forest and woodland ecosystems.

Explore urban forestry

Because the Grove is located within an urban research and educational setting, it can help visitors consider the role trees play in developed landscapes. Topics may include tree selection, landscape planning, long-term care and the benefits and challenges of growing trees in urban environments.

Nevada’s climate presents distinctive growing conditions. The Grove gives visitors an opportunity to observe different tree species and consider the traits that may influence their ability to grow in high-desert environments.

A Living Classroom

The Research Grove was created as a place for learning through observation. Its value lies not only in the trees themselves, but also in the questions, conversations and discoveries they can inspire. As a living classroom, the Grove can support learning at many levels.

Undergraduate students

Undergraduate students can use the Grove to build foundational skills in tree identification, forest ecology and natural resource management. The outdoor setting allows students to connect terminology and concepts introduced in class with living specimens they can observe over time.

Graduate students

Graduate students can use the Grove as a setting for advanced observation, teaching, demonstration and research. It can also provide opportunities to develop questions related to tree growth, physiology, environmental adaptation and long-term landscape performance.

Extension

·¬ÇÑÊÓÆµ Extension provides research-based information, programs and training related to Nevada’s forests, woodlands, trees and landscapes. The Grove can complement that mission by offering a setting for demonstrations and educational programs that translate scientific knowledge into practical information for Nevada communities. 

Researchers

For researchers, a collection of tree species growing within a shared environment can provide opportunities for observation and comparison. The Grove may also support demonstrations, pilot studies and long-term documentation of how individual species respond to local environmental conditions.

Community groups

The Grove can provide community organizations, natural resource professionals, gardeners and other visitors with a welcoming place to learn about trees and their role in healthy landscapes. Guided visits and interpretive materials can make forestry and ecological science more accessible to the public.

K–12 visitors

For younger learners, the Grove can turn trees into an approachable introduction to science. Students can practice observation, compare shapes and textures, learn how scientific names are used and explore the relationships among trees, wildlife, water, soil and climate.

Elwood Miller's Legacy

As a college student, Elwood Miller nearly had to leave school because of financial hardship. Financial assistance allowed him to complete his education and pursue a distinguished career in forestry. That experience shaped his lifelong commitment to helping future students succeed.
